Forage Crete is based on the following principles:
Enjoy nature
Our trips are designed to show you a part of Cretan nature that you wouldn't normally see on your own. We visit different types of ecosystems and take our time to enjoy the beautiful Cretan biodiversity and landscape with all our senses.
Respect nature
We strive to be as sustainable as possible and the practice of foraging helps us achieve that. We enjoy local foods to reduce the adverse effects of large-scale agriculture and food transport around the globe. We follow the seasonality of food availability, as nature intended. We travel in small groups to minimise our impact on local biodiversity.
Appreciate tradition
We discuss the traditions of Crete, with an emphasis on cuisine. Sharing a meal is much more than eating together on Crete: it is an important way of socialising. We follow the same principle, preparing meals together. On our trips, we visit local businesses that have kept (or revived) old Cretan traditions.
Learn from science
We combine the knowledge from two complementary scientific fields: botany and ethnobotany. Botany teaches us how plants function in their natural environments, while ethnobotany teaches us how people use plants. On our trips, a scientist will teach you about the biology of plants, as well as their uses on Crete and elsewhere.
Have fun
Although we have a schedule in order to help you experience a diversity of scents, flavours and images, our pace is leisurely. We appreciate you are on holiday and want you to relax and have fun.
Everyone is welcome
We welcome diversity on our trips. Our vision is to share the beauty of Crete with people from all walks of life, regardless of ethnic background, religion, gender, or sexuality. All we ask from you is that you respect nature and your fellow travellers.
